QUOTATIONS ABOUT GRIEF AND HEALING

Compiled by Sandy Plone, Ph.D.

For those who have suffered losses, which is part of being alive, quotations and poetry can often be soothing. Symbols and metaphors may speak in ways that touch the depth of feelings. Here are a few from both well-known and unknown sources from the literature:

Death is beautiful when seen to be a law, and not an accident – it is as common as life.
Henry David Thoreau

As a well-spent day brings happy sleep, so a life well used brings a happy death.
Leonardo da Vinci

Death ends a life, not a relationship.
Robert Benchly

Love is stronger than death even though it can’t stop death from happening, but
no matter how hard death tries it can’t separate people from love. It can’t take away
our memories either. In the end, life is stronger that death.
Unknown

When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure.
Unknown

Tears are the silent language of grief.
Voltaire

He that conceals his grief finds no remedy for it.
Turkish Proverb

To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die.
Thomas Campbell

Death is a challenge. It tells us not to waste time…it tells us to tell each other
right now that we love each other.
Leo Buscaglia

The bitterest tears shed over graves are for words left unsaid and deeds left undone.
Harriet Beecher Stowe

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it
ceases to be serious when people laugh.
George Bernard Shaw
